Congaree Baptist Church was organized in January 1871. The church began with Pastor Peter A. Buyck and 15 members. Over the years, the membership increased with many new additions. On November 2, 1952, the church decided to begin a Building Fund to be used to construct a larger and more convenient building. On May 10, 1955, additional land was acquired and in February 1957, the foundation was dug by the Calhoun County Chain Gang and the men of the church. Reverend J. W. Bevis of Columbia, having begun his services on June 1, 1956, donated the plans and worked untiringly along with the church members to complete the new sanctuary. The first church service was held in the new house of worship on June 1, 1958. This was also Homecoming Day and the second anniversary of Reverend Bevis as pastor. The cost of this building was $20,000.00. Most of the work was done by the members and by donations of money and materials, which kept the cost down. In February 1967, two acres of land was purchased for $500.00 from Mrs. Vernie Lee Coker for a future parsonage site. On February 5, 1969, the Parsonage Fund was started with $1,000.00 transferred from the church treasury and deposited in American Bank and Trust. Each fourth Sunday offering was designated for the Parsonage Fund. On April 21, 1973, groundbreaking services for the parsonage were held with Deacons Lynwood Heckle, Robert Crider, Calvin Wise, Carey Buyck, Haskell Sharpe, and Reverend Mayhew West. On November 30, 1974, Reverend West and his family moved into the parsonage. On January 5, 1975, a Dedication Service was held at the parsonage. This was a first for our church, having a pastor in the community to better serve the work of the Lord - A DREAM COME TRUE!! Many additions and renovations took place over the years. Construction began on our Fellowship Building in July 1985. Completion was in June 1986. The cost of this building was approximately $25,000.00. The major renovation was that of the sanctuary, which began in July 1989, at a cost of $75,000.00. This renovation was under the leadership of Reverend G. A. Henderson. Our first service held in the newly renovated sanctuary was January 21, 1990. We entered the building totally debt free. MINISTRY MILESTONES: A first for our church was to hire a part-time youth minister, Barry Bell and his wife Mary, in August 1996. June 2002 - The Haiti Mission Project was started. This project supports a school in Haiti. July 2004 - The church purchased a bus for the amount of $51,000.00. May 2005 - Church Assistance Program was organized. This program was designed to assist church members in times of financial need. In the past five years, we have had 19 new members by baptism and 8 by transfer of letter.
